Dear Diary

It’s the diary of a Mad Duchess filled with random thoughts and ideas about pushing one’s creative boundaries.

New Season New Shapes

“What is your inspiration?” A question often asked but not easily answered. The seasons and nature are on the top of my list, but also color, whimsey, and surprisingly Hollywood movies. But I could visit a museum for a day and come out completely inspired by new shapes, colors, and moods. The more visual stimulation the better. But there is also the ideas that stem from touch and texture. My workroom materials more often than not, help me create. Working with a finite set of materials forces me to design within a particular confine. Restriction often gives birth to ingenuity and design.

If I had access to all the materials in the world, imagine the things I could do. But with too much to choose from, imagine the arduous time it takes me to dream up the final product! My advice to anyone going through a creative rut is to gather a small collection of materials, and begin sketching ideas using those items. Physically limiting our tools help us to hone in ideas faster. Look at it this way, a corralled idea can only get bigger and better.

A little exercise (or challenge) for myself this month will be using as many items I already have in my workroom. How do you challenge your creative process?
