Dear Diary

It’s the diary of a Mad Duchess filled with random thoughts and ideas about pushing one’s creative boundaries.

June Heat

This is the time where milliners take a much deserved break from the height of Spring hat making. The heat has been relentless here in central Texas. Spring temperatures were quickly replaced by an early Summer that’s also put us in Stage 1 drought conditions. Rain skipped over our neck of the woods and we don’t know when its coming back.

With water conservation at the top of our household goals, we have started doing small things to prevent water run-off waste. I am thinking of alternative ways to dye my straw this year without wasting water. I decided to use as many of my Summer hats in natural or white sans dyeing, and I might just paint a few by hand. Everything is in its experimental stage right now.

I will have a few red and pink hats and hairbands on display next month at Austin’s Line Hotel as part of the Fall Future Front Line up. This includes participating in an evening disco pool night in September. I hope to have some Austin-esque pieces created by then for this hip crowd. Then I will be back at the Neil Cochrane Museum for an art show. I have spent many afternoons sketching while dog watching my pup on our front lawn. My imagination abounds under 300-year-old oak trees, but my energy can’t keep up with that wagging little tail. I’ve spent maybe two days in the studio since his arrival. Doing my best to find that perfect puppy mom work schedule. Woof!
