Dear Diary

It’s the diary of a Mad Duchess filled with random thoughts and ideas about pushing one’s creative boundaries.

Spring Pop-Ups

My pop-up display at the Kentucky Derby Viewing Party. It was a lovely air-conditioned space to have on an unusually hot Spring day.

I enjoyed testing out the Pop-up concept these past few weeks, first at the Future Front Market, a local craft fair that takes place twice a year, and then at the Kentucky Derby Viewing Party. Never underestimate the power of human contact, not just for marketing, but for the soul. It was most rewarding watching locals try on my hats and answer millinery questions. We were just excited to be sharing a space and being part of a community that did not include Zoom.

After two Pop-ups back-to-back, I have a new appreciation for artisans who do these events full time. The packing, loading, unloading, set-up, and then repeat was torture. I can’t imagine doing more than a couple of these a year.

A side view of my pop-up shop. There were lovely antiques and furnishings in my space.

Ascot and Derby inspire my every Spring with new colors and flowers. For those who follow the color of the year for fashion, it feels like purple has come back around, but so has pastels, and bright jewel tones. Sounds like anything goes. If clothing designers are following color trends, then I feel a bit obligated to carry some similar offerings, just in case someone wants to match a dress to a hat. But most milliners offer custom match, so what’s the point? (Shoulder shrug emoji right here.)

Go check out my new offerings at the shop HERE. My studio work table is filled with more pieces waiting to be imagined and completed, but it will have to wait. My hatting came to a screeching halt after Derby day because I adopted a new puppy, and this little guy Bennett (short for Tony Bennett) has sucked up all my time and heart. There are at least a dozen new pieces available, and I am still loading more to the shop soon. Stay tuned!

Tony Bennett, nine-weeks old.
