Dear Diary

It’s the diary of a Mad Duchess filled with random thoughts and ideas about pushing one’s creative boundaries.

Honey! Beehive Yourself!

Honey! Beehive Yourself!

I gathered all the materials for a beehive hat a while back, maybe as far as late last year and saved it for Spring of this year. When the Bes-ben competition came around, I thought about making the beehive hat, but felt like it too literal because Bes-Ben made several versions in his day (see below). But incidentally, the person who came in second place actually won with a beehive shape almost identical to mine. There was also a clever second beehive entry that didn’t make it into the top ten. Even though I didn’t place, I am still proud of my Pandamonium hat, which is currently on display in Dallas HERE until May 15th, 2022. If you are in Dallas, go take a look while doing some incredible shopping.

The beehive is really three fascinators blocked in five layers of straw each, and stacked on top of each other. Like most of my complex hats, this one took a long time to make. I have a dwindling roll of straw with threaded metallic gold I used to cover the outside fifth layer. Trimmed with vintage silk daisies and lemons, embroidered bees and crinoline. Go to the shop to see more photos of Honey! Beehive Yourself!
